What are the success / opportunity and deer sightings?
Hunters normally see on average 10-15 deer during a sit. We recommend that hunters stay out all day to increase their chances. It's tough to do but most of the bigger bucks are seen and or shot between the hours of 10am to 2pm. A hunter can also expect to see numerous
ATM bucks or bucks that score less than 125 inches. And almost always a hunter leaves Illinois with at least one sighting of a GIANT. In 2006, we had a success rate of about 25%. 1 in 4 hunters who shot at a deer were successful in the recovery.
Opportunity percents are a bit higher with about 35% of the hunters having an opportunity at a legal deer but opted not to shoot or missed. Everyone sees deer and if not are moved to another area at their request. We like to give a stand a 2 day sit before making a move.
